Sumner - Alvah

Waynetown - The death of Alvah SUMNER came suddenly on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Sumner had been in usual health and had just came from his son's store to the barber shop, run by two of his grandsons where he spent much of his time. After taking a drink of water he began coughing as though strangling and Fern Sumner and Ed Monroe who were in the shop went to him. He looked up and said, "I am gone." They lifted him up in a barber chair and called Dr. Hurt but life was extinct before the physician arrived. Mr. Sumner was born in Darke Co OH March 15, 1828. He had passed his 86th milestone. He came to Indiana when a boy and settled in Fountain County near old Chambersburg. He was married to Miss Emily BOOE in 1859 and to this union were born 4 children: Alfonse C. Sumner living here; Will H. of Peru; Frank W whose death occurred two years ago and Mrs. Lincoln Hesler of Crawfordsville. He leaves 5 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The funeral services will be held at the home of his son, AC Sumner, Thursday afternoon at 1. A short talk will be made by PJ Lough and the body placed at rest in Rockfield Cemetery near Veedersburg by the side of the wife who preceded him in death some 12 years. Uncle Alvah was the last one of his immediate family, a brother and sister and one brother-in-law all dying within the past year. He was a member of the Christian Church here. Waynetown never had a citizen cleaner in life and purer in charater than Alvah Sumner and his going marks the passing of one of the pioneers.
